Triple Vision: Collaborative Architectural Design for an Optometry Office

Primary Eyecare Unveils Fashion-Forward Interior Design in New Beverly Hills Location

Quick article overview: FS Design Group worked with Primary Eyecare Dr. Richlin, OD & Associates to create a cohesive, brand-forward interior design for a Beverly Hills optometry office. Completed in partnership with FS Design Group with Raymond Fox & Associates, the 5,000-square-foot space blends functional optometry planning with stylish retail eyewear displays, natural materials and curated lighting to deliver a modern, fashion-focused eyecare experience.

Creating a successful interior design requires skill, creativity and discipline. But maybe most importantly, it requires an ability to work collaboratively.

Primary Eyecare, Dr. Richlin, O.D. & Associates’ new office in Beverly Hills, is a perfect example. We have a strong track record of successful collaboration with the prime architect on the job, Raymond Fox & Associates, and we also enjoyed a productive relationship with the client.

Three Perspectives, One Vision

Once Ray Fox and his team worked with Dr. Richlin’s team to determine the programming and functionality required for the new office, we took our cues from the architectural plan and layered in an interior design that conveys the look, feel and branding that the client wanted to integrate.

Our client had great design vision and wanted to be involved in materials selection. We even met with them to tour several spaces they wanted to use as inspiration.

“I enjoyed working with our client,” said FS Design Group Senior Designer Laura Vavrunek. “From the collaborative relationship we established, they were accommodating and trusting of our work and decisions.”

Interior Design for Eyecare

To walk into the new Primary Eyecare office is to be inspired by how taking care of your eyes can also be a fashion statement. Approximately a quarter of the 5,000-square-foot office is dedicated to an assortment of beautifully displayed, fashionable eyeglass frames.

We worked with Eye Designs Group, a third-party ophthalmic space planning retail designer who custom designed bespoke frame display cases and specialty lighting. To augment the lighting already provided in the display cases and the natural light filtering through windows, we considered the client’s personal interest in a mid-century modern style and sourced George Nelson-designed spherical shaped fixtures that emit a soft, even quality of light to balance out the stark white retail setting.

In the reception area, we continued the fashionable theme by preserving the attractive, vintage architecture of the building, which includes a high ceiling with exposed cement coffers. We added a custom, wood-contour slat wall that provides an “eye-catching” visual from floor to ceiling.

We wove in our client’s vision for a neutral color palette by using natural wood tones and white accents. We added an element of interest to the rectangular room by designing a diagonal, contrasting, wood runway strip with a luxury vinyl tile that mimics concrete on either side of it. Artwork and other accents provide pops of color for the room.

The exam rooms are removed from the lobby, lounge and retail showcase and are accessed through a corridor. Much of our other medical office design work involves accommodating heavy equipment, but an optometry office doesn’t have such requirements. It was easy to pull through some of the same design elements and materials found front-of-house to provide aesthetic symmetry throughout the office for Primary Eyecare.

Team Players

“We were  fortunate to have a client who enjoys the design process and is savvy enough to contribute to the overall design plan,” said FS Design Group Owner and Principal Amy Tobia.

We’re honored to have helped this client bring a vision into focus. If you’re looking for excellence in eyecare and a fashionable experience to boot, we know a place.
