Interior Design for Senior Connection: Reimagining the Café Experience at Wesley Palms in San Diego

Overview: Thoughtful senior living interior design supports healthy aging by creating spaces that encourage interaction and community engagement.

Interior design has the power to shape how people interact, connect and experience their daily lives. In senior living communities, those design decisions can have an even greater impact, influencing everything from social engagement and wellness to nutrition and overall quality of life.

That philosophy is at the heart of a new project nearing completion at Front Porch’s Wesley Palms Retirement Community in San Diego, where FS Design Group is transforming an existing space into a vibrant new café and community hub designed to bring residents together throughout the day.

Rather than creating a traditional dining venue, the project centers on creating new experiences at a natural crossroads within the community. By leveraging under-utilized space, we’re able to expand resident choices for dining and gathering.

“We wanted to build on the way residents already use the space and create even more opportunities for connection,” said Amy Tobia, principal of FS Design Group and lead interior designer on the project. “The café is designed to support a variety of experiences, from grab-and-go dining and casual gatherings to wellness events, art showcases and social programs.”

Designing a Flexible Community Hub

The interior design supports an evolving schedule of activities and events that extend beyond traditional dining.

Residents may enjoy wine and cheese receptions tied to art gallery exhibitions, wellness programming such as yoga classes followed by healthy refreshments, or chef-curated dining experiences that create opportunities for learning and connection.

This flexibility reflects a growing trend in senior living interior design, where spaces are designed to support social engagement and active lifestyles rather than serving a single purpose.

Interior Design for Senior Wellness

Research continues to show that dining experiences play an important role in supporting healthy aging. Senior living communities increasingly recognize that meals provide more than nutrition. Shared dining experiences can foster friendships, reduce isolation and encourage healthier eating habits. At Wesley Palms, dining programs are intentionally designed to support resident wellness, connection and quality of life — especially for residents in memory care.

The new café was designed with those goals in mind.

Located adjacent to outdoor gathering areas, the space will feature increased glazing and natural light, creating stronger visual connections to the surrounding landscape. New shade structures, enhanced outdoor seating and extensive plant material will further blur the line between indoors and outdoors.

Natural elements have become an important component of healthcare interior design and senior living interior design because they help create calming, restorative environments that support emotional well-being.

“We’re bringing in living walls, more greenery and significantly more natural light,” Tobia said. “The goal is to create a warm, uplifting environment that feels connected to nature and encourages residents to spend time together.”

A Modern Coastal Aesthetic

The design draws inspiration from nearby La Jolla’s coastal character while remaining connected to the existing architecture of Wesley Palms.

The aesthetic combines mid-century modern influences with the relaxed feel of a contemporary summer house. A palette of blues, golds and taupe tones creates a light, welcoming environment, while carefully selected materials and furnishings provide both comfort and flexibility.

The result is a space that feels fresh and contemporary without feeling disconnected from the community’s established identity.

Blending Function and Hospitality

FS Design Group is working closely with Orness Design Group and the Wesley Palms culinary team to ensure the space functions as beautifully as it looks.

A key design challenge involved creating food service capabilities that support residents when needed without allowing equipment and operational requirements to dominate the space when dining service is not underway.

The solution incorporates custom-designed elements that can be integrated into the environment when not in use, preserving the residential feel of the café.

“It’s similar to the way spaces are designed on cruise ships or airplanes,” Tobia explained. “The environment can quickly transform to support food service, but when it’s not needed, the operational components disappear and the space feels like a comfortable living room.”

Creating Meaningful Experiences

As the project approaches completion, the new café represents more than a renovation. It reflects a broader understanding of how thoughtful interior design can support healthy aging.

By combining hospitality-inspired design, flexible programming, natural elements and opportunities for social connection, the new space is designed to enhance daily life for residents while creating meaningful opportunities to gather, engage and build community.
